    try reset to factory settings
    then try restore

if none of those worked I'd guess hardware

    Hope this helped!

is it happening only for several songs or for every sound (eg. keyboard clicks)?

Reinstall to a stock apple firmware. reset your device. If it continues I'd suggest you check when your warranty expires and seek help from Apple as it could be a hardware issue.

If restoring didn't fix it I'm going to have to say it's a hardware issue. I had an iPod nano that had a similar problem. Let's hope you still have warranty.

Seems to be an hardware problem :S
The best way to restore for you is via settings >> reset >> delete iPod!
If that isn't working it surely is a hardware problem

I've noticed that if you have a dock connector that uses the audio out, such as an FM transmitter, the volume bar disappears. maybe it thinks its using the line out and so it doesn't play from the speaker..
Looks like it is a hardware problem..
    shame
