But still makes OS called Linux :>

It depends :p Linux in iPhone is better because it's open kernel and you can run custom drivers :>

Yes, Android will be one of things you can run... but first we need working kernel :p

No, nobody makes an operating system called Linux. There is no Linux Operating System.

Again, not true. The kernel is working fine. What we need are the things on this map:

Please don't give out advice and information if you are just speculating or don't actually know. You will just confuse the already confused. I have not performed the OpeniBoot (nor will I until it's functionally useful) so I certainly am not giving out advice concerning that topic. I do understand Linux, however, and that's all the advice I feel knowledgeable about to give.

In linux drivers are part of kernel specially in embedded devices, sorry if i confuses you :p This kernel can only display text, nothing else :> so we need well build kernel with drivers in, to run things like Android.

You right, but still my apps for Linux are for Linux as OS :> It's confusing but it's right too :p

No, this is all still very wrong. The kernel is not a text displayer.
There is the Linux kernel, and then there is the rest of the system that makes it an operating system. Your statement is incorrect.

i have been watching the progress of linux for ipod and thus i kinda like the feel of it! but still i have a few questions.....
1.How much space will linux take up if is done ?
2.About the drivers being customised and written for ipod...can this be done to potentially make use of the bluetooth on the BCM4359 chip....:D?
this is to use a bluetooth enabled phone to make use of gprs so that ipod touch can connect to internet anywhere.......
3.Will there be any drivers to make the 30 pin connector be able to read a card reader....I want to do this to have my huge photos taken on dslr transfer to ipod touch 2g (16gb) for easier viewing, editing and storage purposes.....:D

with all being said i support linux!
    lol ...i mean it!

    1. I can't imagine that it will be very large. With all driver and default applications included the package shouldn't be more than 100MB. This all depends on what applications the developers will bundle with it. The kernel and drivers won't be too large.
    2. This is what we all hope and expect. Since these aren't proprietary chips you are talking about, there are most likley open-source drivers already in existence that can be easily ported.
    3. That all depends on if someone is capable and interested in making it. My opinion is that probably not, since I don't see this being a popular request.

So Rickatnight11 you seem to know a lot about this stuff and in all honesty i have no idea but i was wondering 1. What kind of stuff would we be able to do if we were able to get the Linux kernel up and running on the ipod. 2. what would be different from the Linux ipod and the jail broken ipod. 3. how much time do you think it would take to get a fully functional Linux ipod just based off what we have got in front of us a month? half a year? or infinite like probably never

    1. Good question (although to be a stickler, they already have the kernel up and running.) I'm guessing you are asking what we can do once a working operating system is up and running. Well, that's hard to say with any certainly, but I imagine that you can do everything you can currently do with the Apple OS, but so much more. Because there are already millions of software projects developed for the Linux architecture, we have that many potential application ports. People are looking at Android since it's developed for the ARM processor (which the iPhone and iPod Touch use) and is the most widespread mobile Linux OS at the moment. (At least the most famous.) I, personally, want to see Ubuntu MID ported since Conical has recently announced their plans to develop for ARM.
    2. I think that the interface between the computer and the iPod Touch and iPhone will be astronomically better. Rather than being locked to Apple's awful excuse for a media player and organizer, the USB interface could be used in any way you could dream of. It could be as simple as plugging it into your machine and it popping up as a drive like any other MP3 player. In addition to the PC-device interface, I think we will have a much wider range of available applications. They will perform better, as well, because they will have the knowledge and experience of the open-source community behind them.
    3. I can only guess. I think that we will have a functional Linux-based operating system for the iPhone and iPod Touch (with a GUI, touch-screen support, and USB interface) within two months. Don't hold me to it though!

Your words show the light to somewat a micro computer in our hands which i always dreamt of.....btw is it also the same as ipod touch 2g? i heard the 2g has a new processor causing a few setbacks....like jb.....and the processor 'IS' much power full......"Oh God Please Make this come True....:D"

Well, this was the original purpose of the GNU/Linux Operating System: to develop an operating system that could run on any hardware so that the user was not tied down by proprietary hardware/software. There's no reason why the same shouldn't be true of our handheld devices. If that doesn't interest some people, then fine; don't install it. But for those of us that this interests, this is a lot of fun.

I don't know anything about the iPod Touch 2G's hardware so I can't speak to that. All I know is that the Dev-Team is focusing their efforts elsewhere at the moment, so even if developing a jailbreak for it is easy, they aren't working on it.
