This is my understanding of the current VOIP situation:

An unmodded iVoice Pro microphone will work with a first-generation iPod touch by plugging it into the dock connector port, thus allowing VOIP calls to be made.

    Am I correct?

Absolutely yes! I've got a 1st gen iPod touch (FW 2.2) with the iVoice III (unmodded) and Fring installed and a VoipCheap account. I've been calling people to (brag!) test the quality and excepting the small delay it works great. The iVoice III is out of production but you should be able to find one on ebay. The Pro has the external speaker, so privacy is out of the question.
