So earlier today after receiving a text I got an alert that said "Your sms mailbox is full. New messages cannot be received until you delete some messages." I didn't know the iphone had a limit and this really is pissing me off. I do not delete my text messages.

    So to summarize:

    1. What is the limit on the number of texts

    2. How can I change the limit.

I have an iphone 3gs jailbroken on 3.0.

I send on average 12000 a month and I've had the phone for over a year and a half now. I didn't even know there was a limit, and I'm on AT&t.

Do you mean that you never delete your conversations from your iPhone? If that's the case then it's probably that the iPhone OS only allocates so much space to store messages, and that space is full. That's my guess.

Yes that is what I mean, is there a way to change the amount it allocates to save messages, I have over 9 gb of free space left.

    What carrier are you on?

I know the 2G had a limit of 1000 texts but I think they did away with that.

I'm on T-Mobile (I believe AT+T does the same) and my phone will automatically delete old texts: It keeps the previous 60 or so texts per conversation (not sure if they do it by the date or the amount of messages) and then they delete the old ones. I can still retrieve the old ones but they won't stay on the phone - I can see them but they don't stay in the conversation.

There are some programs to get your messages "synced" to your computer if you need to save any messages.

Regardless; I would assume this is something unique with your carrier but again that is just my guess.
