This is for windows only, I don't have a mac so idk the path. Sorry
If you have downloaded 4.1 from somewhere other than iTunes (like i have, iTunes seems to download slower for me) and want to update, but iTunes makes you download first simply make a copy of it and paste it in:
[Username]\Application Data (Also know as AppData)\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\[iDevice] Software Upgrades
(Replace [Username] with your username on your computer and replace [iDevice] with either iPod or iPhone, depending on which device the IPSW is for)
This way, you don't have to hit shift and hit restore to upgrade, you can just hit upgrade.

    (Tested with iTunes 10)

This is kinda on topic, but if I click upgrade on itunes, download 4.1 but pull out ipod, when I plug ipod back in will it auto-upgrade?

It shouldn't. But usually it pops up and gives you 3 options, one to cancel, one to download and upgrade, and one to download only. If you only want to download and not upgrade, then just hit download only. If you want to do both, hit download and upgrade. If you don't want to touch it at all, hit cancel

For those of us with Mac, the path is /Users/*username*/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/

Works well. BTW first post ever here...long time lurker...
