My sleep button is starting to go out and random times and I'm thinking about sending it in since it's still under warranty till next year.

However, It may have gotten damaged last weekend when I sat outside for 6 hours in the rain during a concert for The Greenbrier Classic. I never had trouble until after that.

Would Apple be able to tell that and not replace it?

    Thanks

check in your earphone jack if its pink then apple won't replace it.
Turn it off and leave in a sealed airtight bag of rice for 10 days.

The iPod itself works fine, it's just the sleep button. I've not had any other problems with it, and the show was a week ago.

Water may not have done it at all, may just be wearing out...

    I don't think it's pink, but I'm drinking lol

When this happened to me, the pink was clear to recognize.

That's the thing with that button - it doesn't seal as well as the rest of the display (which has a rubber gasket all around). It doesn't take much water to interfere with the operation of the button, since the conductors are so close together. I've fixed many iPods, and I have yet to come across a button that wore out from overuse.

The water won't go away on its own. Like the other posters indicate, check the paper color - if white, go to the Apple store. If pink, try the rice trick. Beyond that, you can either jailbreak it and install a utility to emulate the button with a gesture, or crack it open and dry it out.
