I know many threads have been started with their own little ways of recovering from the problem, but they all involve restoring over and over again. This method does not require you to do that.

    STEPS TO TAKE:
    1. upon recieving BSD root error, press and hold home & standby (power) until the screen goes black.
    2. release these two buttons, then hold down the home button. At this point (with the button still held down) plug the iPod / iPhone into the computer. Hold home untill you see the connect to itunes screen.
    3. in ziphoneGUI (download latest version if you cannot see what do do! [http://www.downloadziphone.org/]) (i only know about the windows version) press "Click to show advanced features"
    4. under "Change phone Mode", press "Normal Mode"
wait, and the phone will reboot into the normal operating mode!

i hope this helps you all!

somewhat unfortunately this will only boot into un-jailbroken..
it just skips the pointless restore..
