Would it be possible to mimic the software/hardware inside the iphone that reads sim cards and turn that into an ipot accessory? With the combination of that, a mic, and speaker, we have an iphone (minus the expensive charges). Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

I doubt it, because wouldn't be simplier to just buy an iPhone?

A SIM card = cellphone contract.
A simplier solution would be to just use a mic+speaker for some VoIP action.

True, but voip would constantly need a wi-fi connection. I no about how to send a connection from a windows smartphone and all, but it would be easier to have a sim card accessory, besides you wouldent need to carry around two devices all the time.

the card reader could attach to the serial port just like the microphone that has been made; the inside could look like the iPhone's sim card reader

Your basically suggesting connecting a small phone onto the serial port. Totally pointless, would cost so much your better off getting the iPhone.
Id push it as far as a BT dongle to link the iPod to your existing phone for data, but nothing else.

You do realize a phone not only consists on a SIM card.... right? o_o

obviously, but in this case the ipot already has most of the internals needed to use it as a phone. What could happen is instead of using a Voip app over wifi, the ipot could take the phone signal from a simcard/antenna attachment.

jango271 - this IS a good idea because if such a unit were produced, especially for CDMA phones - then you would have an incredible accessory. If someone could make a device that "cradled" the iPoT by snapping into the dock connector on the bottom, it would be perfect. Unfortunately I do not see anything like this ever becoming a possibility because in the real world, you would have to get Apple on board with you so that they would not change the hardware/software specs and render your device useless.

The device would be functional as long as a jailbreak is possible. As for what the device might look like, it could be as you suggested: a shell-like, all-around case-type thing with a mic at the bottom and speaker at the top, like the device detailed in this thread: http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12142

Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt the iPhone a GSM based... phone? (o_o) The touch obviously doesnt have the required hardware and the phone won't work with WiFi unless it's VoIP... if you want an iPhone that bad then get one... this thread is going nowhere...

Better idea: Attach a SIM card reader to a calculator and you'll have a calculator with a built-in phone...
