The 2G already has an untethered low-level jailbreak. Spirit, being a high level jailbreak isn't needed and is only really there to serve as a way for 3G iPods and the corresponding iPhone partners to have an untethered life.

i personally rejailbroke. just use pkgbackup or something and backup with itunes. having an untethered jailbreak is extremely handy compared to a tethered one. i.e. if cydia crashes and your on a plane to someplace without a computer, having an untethered jailbreak will allow you to reboot.
