    2nd generation.

    I see some nice deals off craiglist for used ones:

    $165 for 8gb
    $195 for 16gb

    This is an upgrade from a 30gb 5th gen. Basically 8gb and 16gb isnt enough for my whole music collection so I'll have to be selective. But if I'm going to have to be selective a might as well get the cheapest one? I mainly want to get the touch, aside from music-on-the-go, are the apps and wifi capability since I am a college student (and wifi is everywhere).

    How much capacity do apps consume?
    What's your opinion? For $30, it's double the capacity...

    if the diff is only $30 and money isn't super tight, go for the 16GB, you will be glad you did in the long run.

    Before you get onee off of craigslist, look on apple.com in the store at the refurbished iPod touch and see what they are going for - I think you can pay less for that for an 8GB refurb from apple, which comes with a warranty.

    there are upsides to the 1st generation - you can jailbreak them, and right now the 2nd generations have no jailbreak

    Is it simply a matter of time that 2nd generation can be jailbroken, or is it flat out not jailbreakable?

    I got mine for "free" (in exchange for doing some puter work) but I love my 8GB 1st generation iPod touch. to me there are upsides and downsides to both the 1st and 2nd generation ipod touch.

    1st gen:
    pros: can be jailbroken, generally cheaper
    cons: can't use a microphone for telephony

    2nd gen:
    pros: sleeker design, can use microphone for telephony, more memory, faster processor
    cons: can't be jailbroken (yet), more expensive

    get the 16gb.

    so you're in mid level.

    8gb = too small.
    32gb = too big.
