I would hold out, 256 mb of ram does not cut it with the retina display

No please don't, it's very disappointing compared to the other devices out right now.

You'd definitely like it a helluva lot better than your current iPod Touch and you would definitely be able to find a good case faster as there are a whole lot more cases out for the iPod Touch 4G. Still, I highly recommend that you wait until the next one is released. That way you'll have more choices and you can decide which you would actually want and whether or not it would be worthy upgrading all the way considering the 4th gen's price will be substantially lowered following the 5th gen's release. Whatever you decide to do, I'm certain you'll be much happier than you are with your current device.

Do not listen to people telling you to wait. They just like to wait on the sidelines hoping something good will come out. They don't even know when Apple would even update the iPod touch lineup.

If I were you I would get one, plus its already jailbreakable. I upgraded from my 2G to a 4G and I am still loving it. Plus the screen is gorgeous if you use the right apps.

The main concern is the ram. Personally, I lag with a few tweaks and I can't even play infinity blade in safe mode. It could be wear and tear from a lot of use for about a year and a half though

My iPod still runs Infinity Blade without much lag. I clear my multitasking tray constantly. I understand that RAM is a problem for most people on this forum (no clue why, since I can still flawlessly use it), but it is better than any alternative. Waiting should never be an option, specially without a target date.

It's actually very clear how Apple updates it's devices. They stick to a constant trend, especially with iOS devices, and I'd history proves anything it's that this year, the iPod Touch will get a serious update. Considering it has already had its intermediate minimal update like it has been done previously, the pattern suggests it's a goid idea to wait.

The fact of the matter is nobody except those within Apple's circle knows the details. That includes you too, so like I was saying, being too hasty now with your money will cause you problems in the future. It's up to him on the route he decides to go, I just suggest (not tell) that he waits until his options are more open.

Strange. I also clear my tray obsessively. I personally would wait, but if newer devices are for some reason better, then go for it

I would wait. RAM and camera, probably my biggest concerns.

Well, as long as you don't jail break and install Cydia, the iPod touch 4g will be FAST. my sister's iPod T4g is insanely fast compared to my 2g iPod touch. Just wait for the iPod touch 5g this September-ish.
