Wait for the 5th generation iPod Touch. We don't know it might have 512 megabytes of RAM, an A5 chip, and a better GPU that removes lag on some retina compatible games.

I had a 2g and it crashed heaps. I would definitely upgrade. No question.

It also might have a terrible battery life and go off like a toaster in your hand.

The iPad 2 didn't have both problems.

Winteroboard and iOS 5 don't mix with my iPod Touch 4g

I rekon you should get a new iPod. (i hate missing out on features of iOS 5 too) but wait untill the iPod Touch 5th generation comes out. It will probably be out by the end of the year and will be worth the wait :)

Like the others said, I would wait for the new one, it will be totally worth it. Apples track record proves that this should be a major update coming

I'm also interested in this. I have an iPhone 3GS, and at the very least need a retina device for testing ScotDev tweaks, and performance testing (can't tell if it's just 3GS lag or tweak lag XD ).

Would I benefit from buying such a developer device or should I wait for the iPod touch 5?

Up to you. By the time you have all your stuff on it and gotten quite used to it, the next iPod Touch will be out. September is usually the month they release a new iPod touch. I say, if you aren't concerned with having the latest, buy an iPod touch 4g, but word to the wise: don't have buyer's regret when you were warned something better was coming. :p up to you, man!
