    Just a thought...

Maybe someone can literally reverse engineer Apple's software to, instead of sharing Internet connections from the iDevice e.g. iPhone/iPad...

Make the computer share its Internet connection with the iDevice without 3G Internet e.g. iPod/iPad.

This way, it benefits people without Windows Vista, since it is pretty much the only OS, not including Apple or Linux, that can create an ad-hoc wireless that CAN share Internet connections. Windows 7 cannot even make an ad-hoc connection wirelessly. You can go to work and use the server's Internet connection that most likely has a password on it, since your computer has direct LAN cable access for the Internet.

Simply connect your iDevice through cable and you get Internet connection.

You can on the iPhone. It's a special thing. You'd pay more for Apple to put it into the iPod touch. It would almost be worth buying an iPhone at that point.

I am not sure you get my point. Instead of sharing the iDevice's connection with the computer, share the computer's connection with the iDevice.

You can already do that. Macs have had it built in for a very long time. You just need to access the network settings and select sharing options for wireless devices. PCs are FINALLY getting this with things such as HP's software...which worked for a week and then had software bugs and stopped working completely. -_- dumb HP.

What you're looking for has already been around for a while now. If I understand correctly, you wish to turn your computer into a Wi-Fi wireless access point that other nearby devices can connect to. On the Windows platform, this can be accomplished with either Virtual Router or Connectify, although I prefer Virtual Router out of the two. This software, and others like it, use your computer's Wi-Fi card to emit a Wi-Fi signal from your current internet connection by turning it into a "virtual router," as the application's name suggests. But do know that only the generally newer Wi-Fi cards are able to utilize this software as older ones are incompatible. The best way for you to see whether your card is compatible or not is to simply download, install, and try the software. And as for Macs, Tim has that covered.

But he wants to send an internet connection from his modem through his computer and to his iPod touch via the cable. Not with a WiFi hotspot.

Not possible. I think I heard that there is a Cydia tweak, but I don't think that it works all too well.

Exactly what I am saying. Wifi hotspots are unreliable. Just reverse the process of Internet sharing. Also, some places, like my father's workplace, locks the computers with an admin password so you cannot adjust the connections and thus cannot make a wifi connection. Just connect the cable and off you go. You can both charge, sync and share Internet connection.

Theoretically it could work. You wouldn't be sending an actual internet connection through the cable, though. You would type in a website on the iPod. The iPod would send that information to the computer, where an application of some kind would download the data and send it to the iPod.

It isn't as simple as it sounds though because it would require a jailbreak and a custom application on the iPod and the computer - not to mention a lot of programming.

Funny why it sounds like a Siri proxy and its works.
