What are all these patches for the semi-tethered for? I know what the semi-tethered jailbreak is, but the patches - what do they do? I'm confused.

Well theres some problem with the Jailbroken apps on the Non-Jailbroken part of the Semi-TETHERED version. So patches came out to fix it.

Some apps do not run correctly on semi-tethered. So when you reboot, your iPod refuses to boot, because of them. There are patches for most of the affected apps.

    Oh, ok.
These apps don't work when you boot with a semi-tethered NORMALLY, right? xD
Like, you can see them but not use them right?

No. They will work fine in jailbroken state (with or without patches). But without patches, the official system will not even boot. With a patch, it will boot, but you can't run JB apps on official kernels no matter what. That defeats the whole "official" part.

How does something so straightforward get so confused?

"These apps" run just fine under either jailbreak (semi or full tethered) when a tethered boot has been used. On semi-tethered iPods, when booted in normal (not tethered) mode, most apps just don't work. All the Apple Store apps will work fine, but none of the other (Cydia, etc) apps work. Your iPod works just fine until you can reboot in tethered mode again. That's the beauty of semi...

However, along the way, semi users discovered that installing some apps prevents a semi-tethered iPod from booting into normal mode, (essentially turning the semi jailbreak into the equivalent of the tethered jailbreak).

There are a number of reasons why this happens, but the bottom line is that if you use the semi-tethered jailbreak, you need to pay attention to what applications you install, because you may find that you can't boot into normal mode anymore. And if you can't boot into normal mode, you're (in effect) using the fully tethered jailbreak.

Those that love the security of the semi-tethered jailbreak have been finding ways to "fix" the problem applications, so they don't prevent a semi-tethered jailbreak from booting in normal mode. Some of the fixes work well, some don't work at all. There are a number of threads that warn which files should not be installed, and as new patches are discovered, they're added to the threads here.

If you really want to know the "why" of all of this, ask MuscleNerd. He started it.

    Bless his heart.

I hope this helps, rather than confuses...
