Screen Resolution

    I am trying to connect my laptop running ubuntu whos resolution is 1280xx860 (16:10) to a hp screen with resolution 1440x900 now when i do this i go into system>prefrences>screen resolution, now on there do i have to mirror screens in order to see both the resolutions perfect or what?
    Ps:sorry about the bad spelling im using my ipod.

    What kind of graphics card do you have in the laptop?

    If you have a nvidia card, do the adjustments in nvidia-settings. If your doing big changes and need to save the changes to xorg, you'll have to run as root. type in terminal:
