This is a discussion thread for the "Samsung Airs Provocative TV Ad For Galaxy S III" story posted on the front page.
I'm willing to bet the video is on some form of cloud storage and he was merely sent a link. From my understanding, NFC isnt fast enough to transfer more than small amounts of data so even sending a photo over NFC would be difficult unless it were very low res.
I think this commercial makes an interesting contrast to Apple commercials. You've got several actors, a little sexual innuendo and a narrative. But an Apple commercial is just the device, a hand, a voice over and a monochrome backdrop. I really don't know what it means from a marketing standpoint, but it's interesting to see how each company is attempting to attract new customers.
I doubt it would transfer a video that fast, but I wouldn't mind waiting. What would happen if she accidentally left her phone beside her kids NFC enabled phone, or does the device have to be paired with another phone for it to send?
Yes, that seems likely. You are right about the transfer speed of NFC. Android Beam is mostly for sending links or for making setting up the connection between two devices in an app easy and seamless. Samsung added the functionality for using it for negotiating file transfers over bluetooth or Wifi Direct. If she didn't send a link they cut down the transfer time, similarly to how Apple does in its Siri commercials. What we can be sure of is that the entire video wasn't transferred over NFC though. The phone would make a sound once and then wait for a tap to confirm the transfer. No, there is no pairing required. See the picture below for what it looks like on stock Android. You tap in the the middle there to send it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/tqii6p4lpaptl8r/Screenshot_2012-10-26-20-52-41.png
