This is a stupid question I know, but I have googled with no luck. Is it safe to use apps like facebook, tweetie, or sites like gmail from my ipod touch at public wifi hotspots? We are staying at a place with free wifi, you just have to go into safari and accept their terms and conditions to access the web. I’ve been scared to go to any sites where I have to put in passwords or personal information. Is it safe? Does the VPN feature provide any protection or is that for something else?

    Thanks.

It would be illegal for them to search for passwords put in through their wifi (if it is possible)

If they managed to keep a record of what sites people use (On their wifi) and search through it to find passwords etc, (Which is what i assume the OP was asking) then it would essencially be identity theft, and therefore illegal...

I don't reallt thinks its possible without some kind of keylogger on the iPod (not gonna happen, well at least no for one specific hotspot only) or maybe some decent decryptor.

    Perfectly safe in my eyes.
If you are that scared set apps to auto signin and download safari cookie fix.

Yeah, but i am sure there is probably some way to track what websites are used etc in a wifi connection, and in some addresses, they contain your username and pass...

For the iPod/iPhone, it is PERFECTLY SAFE to use open/free wifi... No need to worry...

I use public wi-fi and it seems to be just fine for me. Haven't had anyone hack my facebook or myspace or anything?

Yes, it's possible. Does it happen often? No. Are you paranoid? Yes
