So is this NUMBER 1 AppStore App for 6/28/10 really worth the NUMBER 1 slot for free apps? Let's take a closer look.*

Rollercoaster Extreme allows "riders" to control their ride on a virtual roller coaster.

Ever wonder what it would be like to control the velocity of a roller coaster while taking a ride on it? Collect points as you zip through many settings: Upper West Side, Downtown, Central Park, and Chinatown. Rollercoaster Extreme utilizes the accelerometer built into the iDevices to control the speed and direction (velocity for all you physics geniuses) of a roller coaster ride.

So how long will this game really entertain me?

I think this question really depends on the type of gamer you are. If you're looking for blood and gory and weaponry, then this game is definitely not for you. However, if you're in the mood for some challenging manoeuvrings through the city on a roller coaster, than this is the app for you. Typically speaking though, how long does the average person have to sit and play an iPhone/iPod touch/iPad game before they are off and doing something else?

    So how do I play?

To make your cart move, move your iDevice in the forwards/down direction or left/right. While these instructions might sound simple, the game is a bit more sophisticated than that: users must complete the tracks quickly to clear the round avoiding obstacles and choosing the right track junction.

    Are there any additional features?

Yes. Users have the option of connecting with Facebook to make wall posts of their advancements. There is also the option to turn sound on and off along with volume controls. It's also possible for users to listen to their own music by launching the application while a song is playing.

    Rollercoaster Extreme's Design

    Graphics & Presentation-

Upper West Side roller coaster ride

    • Appropriate scenes and colors
    • Familiar buttons and commands
    • Easy to read/understand menus
    • No choice of choosing rider

The verdict:While lacking the opportunity to customize the rider, Rollercoaster Extreme has the scenes expected of a roller coaster through the city. (8/10)

    Audio-

    Enable FX greeting
    • Easy to turn sound on/off, but sound does not work on demand
    • Allows users to play their own music while playing the game

The verdict: No rating on the actual sounds the game produces because they are easily accessible. Being able to play whatever song the user would like is a definite plus. Overall, audio receives a low rating because of the absence of expected roller coaster sounds. (4/10)

    Options Menu

    Gameplay/Controls-

    • Good use of accelerometer (calibration controls in options
    • No glitches during riding (loads completely and quickly)
    • Very easy for anyone to use and figure out
    • A bit touchy if tilted too much (user may find they're playing upside-down)

The verdict: Not a bad concept and set of controls; however, Dare Digital Ltd could have used more time in beta testing to correct the problem with upside-down controls. (7/10)

    Reuse Value-
    • Application works solidly, but might get boring after awhile to some users

The verdict: The game works. That's just about it unless the user is obsessed about roller coaster stimulation.(3/10)

    Value For Money-
    • Good value without paying a cent

The verdict: While this game might not stimulate your senses forever, it does provide enough entertainment as a free app.(7/10)

    Improvements-

    • Add/implement actual sound effects
    • Allow users to choose the rider/create personal avatars

This app gives users the chance to ride directly through the city and towns on a personally controlled roller coaster. While the sound is hard to implement, the graphics make up for the lack thereof. The use of the accelerometer is a nice touch even though it might cause the user to be riding upside-down momentarily. Rollercoaster Extreme also allows users to connect with Facebook to share their advancements. Overall, if you're in the mood for something a little bit different and don't mind using just over 17 MB for a free game then give this app a try.

Graphics & Presentation: 4/5 (appropriate design with roller coasters)
Audio: 2/5 (media can be chosen by the user, but roller coaster sounds would enhance the experience)
Gameplay/Controls: 3.5/5 (appropriate and easy to use)
Reuse Value: 1.5/5 (while the concept of the game is somewhat simulating, the game itself is not as exhilarating as expected)
Value For Money: 4/5 (this application is FREE and works just long enough to satisfy boredom)

    TOTAL REVIEW RATING:6/10
    FAIR
    MY iTUNES RATING: 3/5

*Looks like the AppStore might need to reconsider their NUMBER 1 free app...

Wow, this review was great. Mad props for that...

But the game is useless, IMO. I just don't understand why you want to have (and use) an app like this.

Yeah I'm not really sure why it is number 1 for free apps... I could list so many other free apps that are much better qualified. Oh well...it's interesting for a good ten minutes though

Maybe it's just the top free app because they promoted it from Apple. So Apple have put it on top. Either that, it might be the amount of downloads it has.

Do you have to go around changing what people say? Pathetic.
