So hopefully Apple gets my phone replaced out of warranty and all, they got it today so I should be getting it back next week sometime. Of course as soon as I activate it I'm going to jailbreak it using redsn0w I guess, but I have dial up so I don't want to try to download the ipsw for my phone. Is there a way to "copy" the firmware off of my phone to use in redsn0w? Like does backing it up back up the firmware too? Or is there a jailbreak that is one click for 4.0 (Spirit, blackra1n)? I assume my replacement phone will have 4.0 or 4.0.1 on it but if nothing else I can downgrade it since it's a 3G.

It just makes a backup of the stuff on phone like contacts, history, etc.. You will have to get the firmware yourself. Sugest you try using google. Or maybe you have them in the iPod Software Update folder of itunes, which is:

    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

You need to enable Show Hidden Files and Folders

Well if you start downloading now, by the time you finish you'll have your phone back

But in all seriousness, the above post is right. Try that.

well I don't have the files from before I sent my phone in, I got it broken lol. I'll just go "borrow" someones wifi in town and download it there. took like an hour to an hour and a half just to download redsn0w for that, but 10 megs is a lot less then 200-300

Just go to your local library and download it and put it on your USB.

That seems a good idea. Or go to an internet cafe cause they usually have a pretty fast connection.

If you are on Windows 7, the location of your firmwares are in
    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

It's huge for dial up, Firmwares are like impossible to download on dialup.
