Looks like iFixit just did a teardown of the Retina MacBook Pro, and they literally tore it. Cracked it, to be exact. http://venturebeat.com/2012/06/19/macbook-pro-retina-display-teardown-breaks/ See, the newest MacBook no longer uses a panel of glass over the LCD. Therefore, you'll probably want to invest in an Apple Care plan.
If it's not an accidental problem and you're under warranty, I don't see why you would try to repair it yourself anyway. That could be a good thing for you too. If you have a problem with it instead of Apple fixing it, there's a better chance they'll give you a new one.
Like you said though: that's only if you are under the warranty. A lot of people don't want to pay extra for the extended warranty.
You do get a 1 year warranty with it. And the service far exceeds that of any company I have had problems with.
If it's not accidental, it's included in the warranty Apple already gave, which I believe is now 3 years.
