Windows couldn't boot up but fortunately I booted with a Ubuntu live cd and copied all the files to an external hard drive. So, what I wanted to know is if I can install iTunes and direct it to the old files? Will it look as it did before with purchased songs and all that?

If you let your iTunes manage your files (if your music/videos are all stored in your iTunes folder and NOT scattered around in your drive) then you can just back up all the files and export the Library under File>Export Library. You'll get a xml file with all of your metadata (song name, play count, etc).

Load up the files and import the xml file. Done.

If you manually manage your music, then try this

Thanks, it worked even though I didn't delete any files.
