What version of iTunes do you have?
I'm sure if you restore in DFU mode it would fix it.
To do so, turn off the iPhone. Turn it back on, and hold down the home button till you see a cable on the screen (saying you should plug it into your computer).

If that does not help, I found a different fix (well same thing basically): http://modmyi.com/forums/unlocking-activation/11970-unknown-error-occurred-1604-a.html

P.S. Google must be your best friend!

I really get the feeling you're just trying to spam as much as you can Brendanm, just so your "title" changes? I don't know why but most of your posts are useless/repeats of what other people have said.

    Back on topic:

Why did you need a custom FW to restore btw? Are you trying to go back to 3.1.2?

I'm waiting for this as well. My iPhone 3GS is currently stuck on 3.1.3 and I'm trying to figure out a way to get it back up and running. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

No, I'm not. I don't really care about my title, or post count. I have time, I like to devote it to trying to help. Sometimes when I re-post someone elses I idea, I back it up a bit, and usually explain it a little bit better.

Got a problem with it? You midas well screw off buddy...

You need to calm the hell down kiddo. It wasn't meant to be an attack or anything, I just told you how I felt.
