Well, I had 2.2 firmware on my iPod and iTunes 8.2. I paid for and downloaded 3.0 firmware for my iPod. I plugged in my iPod and tried to upgrade, then in the middle of the upgrade it failed and it gave me an error message. I clicked more info and it took me to an Apple site saying that I had to unblock ports 80 and 443, turn off any firewalls etc.

So I unblocked ports 80 and 443 on my router and on my Wifi connection on my computer. 'Cos the upgrade failed on my iPod's screen it showed the iTunes logo and a USB cable. I connected it to iTunes and it just comes up as 'iPod', 'Capacity: n/a' and all of the spaces say 'n/a'. Plus there's only the summary tab.

Luckily all my iPod stuff is backed up. Still, I keep trying to upgrade, turning off various firewalls, browsing the net for answers and still nothing!!

Shift-click restore and browse to your 2.2 IPSW and click OK

    I can't really do that as I don't have the 2.2 firmware

Plus I don't think it will be possible to restore it to any firmware at all. I have tried restoring it several times and have endlessly browsed the internet for a solution...

iTunes always produces an error just when the bar on my ipod is around halfway; the error code is mainly 1603 but there have been others.

I honestly think my iPod is bricked.

EDIT: Well, it's not really bricked it's just that it always shows the connect to itunes screen and I can never restore it.

UPDATE: Well I've go the iPod to restore now but right at the end it asks for a newer version of iTunes and fails. I downloaded the latest iTunes and Quicktime and then when I double-clicked iTunes it would run. I checked in the task manager and it starts up for about 2 seconds then stops. it doesn't appear on screen.

have you tried reinstalling iTunes after a complete uninstall?

Yes. Even though iTunes 8.2 is installed and the latest Quicktime is too, Apple Software Update still says that there is an update for iTunes and Quicktime and by version it says 8.2!!

I don't get this. I'll try installing that update though...

Very interesting. What if you completely uninstalled, then installed an older version on iTunes, then updated. I know it sounds long, but I wonder if it would work?

I installed the update from Apple Software Update, restored and now it's fine.
