We have a 2G IPod Touch with 2X firmware.

Recently it has been hanging up and showing "connect to ITunes" on the screen about weekly.

A reconnect to ITunes for a sync and all was always well...

    Well that is until yesterday...

Yesterday I attempted the typical sync to ITunes and it told me I had to Restore that the IPod was in "recovery mode".

I reluctantly hit the Restore button and it appeared to gather information on the IPod and then the screen on the IPod showed the Apple symbol and a status bar.

The ITunes screen showed a dialog box "Waiting for IPod"...

It did this for about 3 hours before I disconnected the IPod cable manually (pulled it out).

I then held the power button and home button until it reset and it immediately came back to the home screen on the IPod showing "connect to ITunes" no reset or any indication of a reset.

I then hooked it back up to ITunes and it said it again needed a recovery...which I did.

Well 12 hours later ITunes is still "Waiting for IPod" in the recovery mode...

It does not appear that I can recover this IPod the way I am attempting it.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed next?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Try DFU mode.

Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your computer.
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until iTunes pops up with a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
The iPhone screen will remain black.

My device refused to restore at one point, too. This successfully restored it.

    aced6,

    Thanks for the info.

I've tried this procedure twice now with the same results...

I believe I successfully get into DFU mode...the iPod screen is black...I hit 'restore' and then the restore starts...in a few seconds the iPod screen glows white and then the apple symbol comes on.

Eventually the status bar shows up and after about 15 minutes of watching the status bar 'fill' from blank to full...iTunes just sits there saying 'waiting for iPod'.

I've let it sit there for hours with no success.

It sure seems like a software/firmware issue here to me...

The iPod currently 'had' firmware 2.x something on it and now I would have to upgrade to version 3.x something...could that be the issue that I am trying to restore to an older version of firmware?

It appears that others have had and are having this very same issue...

I've updated my iTunes and tried this on a different computer too...all with the same results...

    Any other ideas???

    Thanks!

Try this.. if you don't mind 3.1.3. Download the 3.1.3 IPSW for 2G.. google it. DFU mode your ipod... Shift+Restore and choose the 3.1.3 ipsw. See what happens.

    coca cola,

I downloaded the file to my desktop...now what?

I guess I'm not sure by what you mean Shift+Restore?

Any more information you can share?

Sorry for being so uneducated about this.

    Thanks

I am really not sure what I am doing wrong...

I've downloaded the files (zip)...extracted them to a directory I chose and then go into iTunes and hit 'Shift' and click Restore...a dialog box pops up and I browse my way to the directory I saved and extracted the download but there is NO ipsw file...what am I doing wrong?

    Any thoughts...anyone?

    Thanks

Ok look. You will download a file named: iPod2,1_3.1.3_7e18_restore.ipsw. You just use that, you don't unzip it.

    Coco Cola,

I have searched a bunch of sites and all the downloads I have downloaded ended up being .zip files???

Do you have a link to a site to get the ipsw file?

I'm not sure why I can't find that file???

Thanks again for all of your help!

Stop confusing him touchfan, you have to rename the .zip to .ipsw
