Hey, I have a question. I have a Touch that I got last Christmas (purchased Dec. 24, 2007) and I jailbroke it soon thereafter. Now the earphone jack is messed up, not putting out the left stereo sound unless I fool around with the jack. It happens both with my car audio cord and my headphones, so it's not just the headphones messing up. So, I'll probably soon go to the Apple store and try to use my limited coverage warranty since its still within the 1 year after it was purchased.

My question is, even though this is clearly a hardware malfunction, should I restore my iPod (un-jailbreak it; it's 1.1.2 if that matters for some reason) before taking it to the Apple store?

Also, would I get a new Touch or just a refurb?

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

You must restore, or else you warranty is obviously void. I'm not sure if they will give you a new one or a refurb, but don't get your hopes up for a new one.

A refund is even better. The ipod costed 310, now the 8gb for the NEW ipod is only 299, a refund can pay for a new ipod, + a bunch of apps from itunes.

Ok, so I guess I'll restore it then. One more question though:

It says in the manual that "Deleted data is no longer accessible via the iPod touch user interface, but is not permanently erased from your iPod touch until it is overwritten by new data. For information about permanently erasing all content and settings, see “Resetting iPod touch”." So should I go into the iPod and erase all content and settings in addition to restoring through iTunes in order to ensure that those at Apple won't be able to tell that I've jailbroken it? Thanks!

Update, in case any are interested:

Restored and took my iPod to the Apple Store, spoke with those at the Genius Bar, and they ordered another iPod for me. 3 days later, I get a call from the Apple Store saying they have my new iPod ready for me to pick up. I now have a brand new 1G iPod.
