    Had massive problems with this. used this site and a little patience.

    Basically - if showing error 1604 can't restore then:

    1. press home and standby, reset, until ipod turns off
    2. IMPORTANT - leave overnight, something is running and needs to run down the battery
    3. Turn on and go to general settings and wipe your ipod of all music, videos etc.
    4. If you need to - you can now restore.

    Worked for me

    i have the same problem...
    -->kill ALL apple's proccess from task manager(ipod service itunes helper,apple mobile device)

    -->uninstall ALL apple application from you pc (itunes,ipod,ipod updater,etc)
    -->go to program files and delete all apple's folder (ipod,itunes)
    --> restart you system
    -->install the latest itunes to program files/itunes* (* is anything)
    --> restart you system
    -->put your ipod to restore mode
    --> restore....

    maybe works (works for me)//

    That worked for me, thankfully, was getting so worried! If that happens first time you try, is it likely to happen second time? Daren't try at the moment incase error 1604 comes back.
