I'm in the UK and had a phone which was locked to O2.

The other week my iPhone 4 decided it wanted to be an iPod Touch and would not get any network reception after numerous restores etc I decided to book an appointment at the "Genius Bar".

The guy did some "indepth tests" (looked like he did a restore to me, lol) and said the phone was faulty and would be replaced which I got there and then (unfortunately with 4.0.2 bohoo!!!)

Was just wondering if Apple stock network locked phones of could lock a phone from the Store there and then?

I know the obvious thing to do would be to put another SIM card in from another provider but everyone I know with an iPhone 4 is on O2.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

All iphone 4s in the UK are factory unlocked, no matter who you buy it from. Since O2 lost exclusivity they are forced by law to provide a way to unlock the iphone, apple saved them the trouble and provide all of them unlocked. If it gets replaced by apple at the genius bar it will definitely be unlocked.
