Does anyone have like a step-by-step tutorial on setting up something like VNC so that I can access my computer from anywhere?

I've seen people do this but I've never understood how.

Can anyone help me out here?

    1. Install a VNC server on your computer
    2. Install a VNC viewer on your iPod
    3. Forward a port to your computer that you want to VNC to (default 5900) in your router settings page (Access via something like 192.168.1.1, to find your router IP, type ipconfig (windows) in a command prompt, look for default gateway)
    4. Use DynDNS to set up a hostname for your external IP
    5. Turn on computer, server
    6. Open up VNC app
    7. host : hostname you set up
    port : port you chose
password: your VNC password, if necessary
    8. Connect
