Would there be any kind of improvement in video quality when converting a 720p mkv file into a mp4 and putting it on an ipod touch vs. (for example) a regular xvid encoded avi file into a mp4 file?

Or would I be right in thinking that the converting process and resizing would negate all quality differences?

I didn't know the *.mkv format before, so i had to do a little wikipedia search!

I found that on wikipedia france(because there isn't much on wikipedia english for this format):
"Audio codecs supported by Matroska include Ogg Vorbis, AAC, MP3 and AC3. The video codecs supported include DivX, XviD, RV10, H.264 and Theora."

This tells me that if you convert your videos from *.mkv format, it will probably lose less quality, since it can support H.264, which is the apple video format!
You'll have to try it to be sure that it loses less quality though!!
One thing is for sure, converting videos from avi to mp4 will make your video lose a LOT of quality!!

    I hope this helps!

PS: if anything of what i said is wrong, tell me!
