when you turn your ipod off and then reboot, it does it affect your ipod in anyway long term way e.g shorten the battery life or improve the chance of it having to be sent back to apple for repair or is it perfectly safe fuction?

No, it is the same as rebooting a regular ipod touch, you just need a computer to help you reboot.

In fact rebooting helps, since it cleans up some of that space. "respring"

Remember that's only if you are jailbroken (tethered).
