What exactly is "the kernel"?
A kernel, as far as I understand, is the last (or first) piece of software that communicates with the hardware of a device.
I think my theory about restoring rather than updating is correct looking at this Tweet.
basically is saying that if you were previously jailbroken with blackra1n (and redsn0w) You need to do a full restore before jailbreaking
So one should restore, run Spirit, and then add everything else (music, apps, and such) that they had before (assuming they have a factory 3.1.3)?
Edit: Well I have an unjailbroken and I'm running into this problem.
I think this will only affect you if you were previously JB'd via blackra1n on 3.1.2 and only did an upgrade to 3.1.3 rather than a restore.
Hm, that doesn't explain why I'm stuck at the apple screen, unable to get it to get it to do anything other than reboot at the moment, and I'm starting to get frustrated because, while it's showing it's connecting to the computer, it's not giving me the icon or reading that it's logged into iTunes. I'm not sure how to do a restore at this point, because none of the options I've seen so far have worked.
Ehh...I dunno what to tell you about that buddy :-/
@ Chronic Apathy
If you are having trouble just do a full dfu restore and then jailbreak with spirit
