A friend asked me to jailbreak and unlock his iphone for him, seeing as I have done so on my iPod touch I considered I would give it a go.

    As it stands:
    The iPhone is a 2G 8GB
I did a iTunes update using Custom Firmware (shift+restore) to 3.1.2
The website what told me to do this said that after this was done my iphone would be unlocked if I did this but all I see is the Cydia app but No Service in the top left even though I have my vodafone SIM card inserted.

This is really started to annoy as there is no help anywhere on the internet.
    Thanks

^THIS^ Just goolge blackra1n then run it and you will have an option near the end of the process.

Try doing a network settings reset. I had no service after a custom restore and this solved my problem.

Blacksn0w will not work with the 2G. Blackra1n will work to do the jailbreak but the original poster already has it JB'd.

You need to run "bootneuter". Look for it in Cydia, run it and that will unlock the iPhone for you.
