Sorry I was getting tired of people asking the same question.. maybe this can be stickied so people can always see it when they are going to ask this question.

The question is "Can I buy an iPhone 3g without a contract"

No, the only way to get an iPhone 3g is to get it on a 2 or 3 year contract with your cellphone provider. You cannot go to an apple store and buy it, you cannot buy one at apple.com the only way to get an iPhone 3g is to go to a store (be it apple or cell phone provider) sign up for a 2 or 3 year contract (minimum price for data and voice is around $70)

You may be able to find one on ebay, but it will be useless until there is an unlock for it.

You can buy them in italy because its illegal there to sell phones bound to a contract or something like that. but the us dollar doesn't go to far there...

There are Simcards that unlock the 3G, such as Rebelsim or i-Smartphone, but they are best to steer away from. They modify the identity signal your phone emits which is illegal.

OR in Australia you can get an iPhone 3G with Optus and pay an extra AU$80 to have it unlocked.
