I'm sure you've all noticed that in the 2.0 Firmware, the iPod makes a beep upon receipt of a new mail message.

I usually like the sounds on, but it's loud enough now that I now have to mute my iPod in certain places (class, the library) because I have mail set to fetch every 15 minutes.

I know that I can just disable that and manually check the mail or keep my iPod muted all the time, but I was wondering if there is a faster way to mute the iPod rather than going into Settings > General Sounds > Headphones.

Maybe there's a shortcut or something I don't know about? It's annoying to mute/unmute my iPod several times a day now.

Thanks, but I'm talking about the new mail beep, not pausing the song I'm listening to. With the headphones plugged in it still makes that beep unless I go into the options and mute it.

The thing is, that also mutes the keypress clicks and the slide-to-unlock click, which I like.

Atleast your mail app works. Mine crashes as soon as I enter it.
