Ok, I'm on 2.2.1 software, and if i wanna get 3.1 software for $5.99, do I have to pay $5.99 or the 3.0 software plus the 3.1?

Paying for 3.1 is a one off payment i think, you dont have to go from 3.0 to 3.1

It's like with Windows or OS X. The next version always costs money, while the service packs or updates are free.

IPhoneOS 3.x is based on Snow Leopard; while previous versions of iPhoneOS were based on Leopard. Therefore it costs money to upgrade to the new OS. But, its upgrades, such as 3.0.1, 3.1, and 3.1.1 will be free (providing that you already paid for the new OS).

^ Skylar was only referring to the pricing/upgrade scheme, not the operating system itself lol

No, I was refering to the OS itself. 1.0 - 2.2.1 were all Leopard based operating systems. A fact that was much more prevalent before Apple changed the name to iPhoneOS. Firmwares 3.0 and up are based on Snow Leopard.

    This is fact.

Would downloading the software without paying for it be piracy? Not that I have done this
