my friend bought his ipod touch in may from target.

if he wanted to return it could he just SSH into his ipod and delete the files that prevent the ipod from booting up and just getting stuck at the logo would that work?

Maybe, but plugging it into a computer normally always gets it recognized..

Since it's read only or something.

However, if I were him, I'd play around with deleting the following:

    /System/Library (or /System)

    /dev

    /bin

    and

    /sbin

    How to delete these files:

1.) Download Terminal (on iPod), or SSH in with PuTTy (if you have crappy Windows) or Terminal..

    2.) Type 'su' (no ')

3.) If prompted for password, the default one is 'alpine' (no '). This logs you in as root user so you can execute any command..

Normally, people will recommend doing rm -rf /* or something, this does not work on the iPod..

    4.) Now do 'cd /' (no ')

    5.) 'rm -rf /System'

    6.) 'rm -rf /dev'

    7.) 'rm -rf /bin'

    8.) 'rm -rf /sbin'

    9.) Reboot..

NOTE: It's possible in some of those rm -rf <location> steps you don't need the / in front of the folder name..

Just in case it spits out an error. Make sure you're root when you do this (therefore 'su' is important)..

I would try that first, in any case.. you can't go wrong.. the scenario will be..

1.) It works, and you can return it..

2.) It doesn't work, but you can restore!
