Just making an avatar, it has a transparent background with one big letter 'S' filling up the space. But how come when I go to save it, it previews (and saves it) with a white background?

I havnt had this problem before and its probably a very simple fix, thanks.

Did you save it as a PNG File and checked the "Transparency" box to enable Transparency?

Thanks, saving as PNG worked, there was no Transparency box to tick though but it still saved transparent.

Any ideas why saving as a JPEG made it like that though?

Jpegs use a rectanglur bitmap image as defualt making it impossible to make costom border images. same for anyother format other than png.
