Just a simple question I have I think I know the answer to, but I'm not 100% sure. My friend wants me to update his iPod to 4.0, but the last time he synced it to a computer was the 3.0 jailbreak (and is still unable to sync it). If I update his iPod, the data partition will remain the same, correct? I know for a fact restoring wipes the iPod completely, but wanted to make sure that updating an iPod will NOT erase any data (other than the FW partition). Thanks all

Any first number change (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4) will delete all data.

No because I updated my 3GS from 3.1.3 to 4.0 and kept all of my data

It might be because my friends iPod is on 3.0, not 3.1.3. iTunes did warn me that if I update everything gets deleted.

His iPod isn't synced to any computer anymore, and most music is from CD's. I managed to get all the music off, might work around with his iPod.

Restored from a backup I bet. The update process does that automatically sometimes.

I upgraded my friend's iPhone 3G today from 3.1.3 to 4.0.1, it deleted and restored from backup. Not what I expected, she freaked out and almost punched me, but iTunes helped me out and restored it from a backup.
