can u just plug in any normal microphones for it to work?

Also if the only way of making it work are the new in ear headphones will applications like shazam or midomi work on the new ipod touch?

im new to this but from my experience i believe that the mic has to be approved by apple for ipod to work. i know that the new $30 pair will work but for it to work on those apps the developer has to write an update allowing the ipod touch to work with that app. hope i helped
