In the online Apple Store it says that the remote on the earbuds only works with iPod Touch 2g. I'm wondering if this is a hardware limitation or if there's any chance to get around it. I know the mic won't work, I'm just wondering about the remote controller.

the remote uses the third ring on the headphone plug, the ipod touch 1G only allows 2 so a hardware hack might make it work with the right software mods

Yeah, didn't know what the ring was for until I read that somewhere a few months ago.

On the earphone plugs, there are 3 rings. One for Left Ear, One for Right Ear, and the other is mic/remote. Inside the iPod Touch 1G or the incompatible iDevices, there are only 2 rings, so it wont be able to detect the 3rd ring- Which is the important goodie.

And the only devices, therefore, that support this third ring are:
    • iPhone 3G
    • iPhone 3GS
    • iPod 2G
