How does this thing actually work? I though it was supposed to update you when you get new mail or something, but often I will go into the mail app, there will be mail there, and it didn't notify me beforehand. Does it only check every so often?

Push notification for third party apps. The mail app already had push for a long time, but that feature depends on who provides your email account.

Email works on fetch - you have to select how often it checks

other apps must have it written in to do push... i would bet more updates to app are coming soon

why wouldn't Apple update mail to do push. They allow any 3rd party developer to use it, why not use it themselves?

they do.. it really depends on what mail you use.. if its one of the "pre-set" emails, push should work.

I use Time warner (road runner) so i have to use Fetch

Push Notifications are used by third party applications.

A great example of this would be an IMing application.
