So I used purplerain to jailbreak my 3GS back when the winterboard problem existed which from what I've heard is fixed on the new redsnow jailbreak.

So can I just run the redsnow jailbreak even though I've already used purplerain to fix the patching problems?

Run a jailbreak over a jailbroken iPod? Sounds too risky to me. I suggest you restore first. Up to you though.

Yeah, I didn't know if redsnow would just kind of supplement to the purplerain or if it would make things go haywire. Would like to get winterboard to work, but not so bad that I want to restore everything. Thats why I ask

You don't have to use redsn0w for WinterBoard to work. Saurik updated it as well as mobilesubstrate to support the 3GS. Just install it on your purplera1ned phone.
