It -could- work, it's been done before (WoW runs on Windows and Mac remember?), but nobody actually wants to (patches would be needed, etc). The data being transmitted between clients is still data, remember.

That's completely different, you're talking about different clients connecting to the same server.

Xbox Live works on a single server architecture. Everyone connects to a single mainframe and all matchmaking and other services is done by that.

Playstation Network doesn't use a specific single main server, and instead works on a peer-to-peer network model with users connecting directly to other users. Sure, there's a central server, but it's completely different.

They both have their upsides and downsides, but you couldn't actually mesh them together without serious problems.

Xbox also uses P2P for the actual game host, doesn't it?

The systems are to different to work together at all, they would both have to be taken down and modified for months for it to work anyway, which would cost Money and no one wants to give any up.
