    Hey guys,
I know I'm going to get flamed for posting a thread on such a pointless topic which has been beaten to death already, but anyway....Have a look at this webpage:

    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/#

It refers to the previous iPod touch model as '2nd gen' and calls the 32/64gb models 'Late 2009'
Surely if these new touches were the true '3rd gen' they would have labelled them so?
My apologies if this has already been posted. I did try a search...

Apple doesn't call iMacs with Intel processors Generation X.

They say the year it was out.

Call it 3rd Gen for easy understanding, no matter what it's called. It's the THIRD ONE MADE. Why can't people just do that? Anyway who would say - "iPod Touch Late 2009"

Anyone who says 2.1G/2.5G/2GS needs an warning/infraction.

Get over it! So, there's no camera! That doesn't make this not the 3G! There was no camera on the 1G or 2G, so they must not be the 1G or 2G!

Then why on that same page does apple address the iPod touch 1nd gen as 'iPod touch 1G'? If what you're tying to say is correct it should be labeled as 'iPod touch (Summer 2008)'

If what you're saying/implying is correct, should the iMacs after G5 be G6, G7, etc?
The G5 and under didn't have the year. Just like the 1G iPod. What's your point?

Every iPod doesn't have to have the SAME name.

@ageis1 I figured it out that these people wont understand NO MATTER WHAT! I agree with you though! This is not the planned 3rd Generation iPod touch that was ACTULLY supposed to come!

@too all other people! who say why the name matters its nothing but Why are they calling new nano iPod nano 5th Generation instead they can use the same late 2009 tag as iPod touch....! why not? becasue nano's got major updateS!!!!!!!! and will remain until Sep-2010 but this iPod touch will be changed before then.

I'm not saying I disagree with you and I don't feel like getting on a debate over it. But you do realize how what you said could work both ways, right?

When did I say anything about a camera? I am simply saying that from that website, it is clear that Apple doesnt refer to the new iPod touches as 3G. It's not the fact that not having a camera makes it 'not 3G', it's becasue apple refered to this model as iPod touch (late 2009), and refered to the previous model as iPod touch (2nd gen)

Thanks for pointing this out, but it really doesn't matter and isn't worth arguing over.
