how to get the ipod in dfu:

    1. if the ipod is on hold down power and home in 10 seconds, then release power and keep holding home until the computer says that the ipod is in DFU.

    2. if the ipod is off, hold power and home in 7 seconds, release power and keep hold home until the computer says that the ipod is in DFU.

i normally just puts it in DFU without turning it off first, i think it's a lot easier to time, i don't know if the 7 seconds when it's turned off is right, it's only what i self have experienced.

You might not be doing DFU Mode right, then. There should be nothing on the screen, but iTunes should still open up and say your iPod is in Recovery Mode.

    Youre on Vista.
Try again on XP or Mac OS.

    * Tip: When the screen goes black, wait 1-2 seconds before releasing the power button.
You should NOT see an Apple logo while youre holding the home button.
