According to electronista the iPhone 4 is the most expensive phone Apple has put into production since the iPhone 2G. isuppli took the iPhone 4 and found out how much the parts cost:

iPhone 2G 16GB costs around $223 for parts
iPhone 3G 16GB costs around $173 for parts
iPhone 3GS 16GB costs around $178.96 for parts
iPhone 4 16GB costs around $187.51 for parts

The parts that rack up the price of the iPhone 4 are:
LG Display-built 960×640 IPS screen which costs around $28.50
A4 Processor which costs around $10.75
    Gyroscope costs around $2.60
    Front Facing Camera is Unknown
    Other parts are unknown yet

Just for those parts the total price is about $41.85. Since the iPhone 4 parts are supposedly cost $187.51, the prices for the other parts are around $145.66. Now add the prices for manufactoring, shipping, retailing charges, and the so much profit Apple want's to make the price goes up for $599 for a 16GB iPhone 4.

Of course they do, Apple is a company. All they want is to make money.

Y'all are just using the materials costs. What about all the R&D and labor costs?

lol the PS3 never made a profit until recently. It costs more to make the consoles than to sell them.

That's certainly true, and that's why Sony is milking the ps3 for all that its worth by extending its life with its new magic wand. The same for microsoft with its new kinetic for the xbox 360. They're trying to recoup their loses and maximize their profit.

Apple on the other hand is making a great deal of profit, from the launch alone. That's why they can afford to release a new version of their iphone/ipod every year like clockwork. And also why apple clearly uses a planned obsolescence approach to their product.

Lol, they're a company they have to make money! To survive like us all, maybe like way too much cash, but they still have to!
