So, I've decided that I want to start syncing the music on my ipod touch instead of manually managing it, so I can get the benefits of having my tags automatically updated, and having my song ratings copy back off the device when I plug it in.... but there's one thing that's making my life difficult now: My smart playlists. If I create a smart playlist in itunes, then sync it, it copies all the songs instead of just the playlist rules.... but if I create a smart playlist on the ipod itself, and then sync it, it wipes out the playlist!

Any ideas how to get around this?

The other huge issue with syncing instead of manually managing is that now when I plug into my work computer, it won't let me play songs off the iPod from itunes. Any tips on this would be useful as well

If this is your problem it seems that these are limitations of iTunes. Try another program; MediaMonkey and Winamp come to mind.
