Is it better for the battery to just push the hold button and then push it again when you use it again (whether its 10 minutes or the next day)? Or when im done with it for a long period of time should I power it off by holding down the hold button until it "powers" off?

A power down is more stressful on the battery, so unless you're not planning on using it again for a long period of time, just put it to sleep. For long rests, however, sleep mode will end up using more of your battery then powering off would.

I never turn it off unless I'm not going to use it for at least 5 hours.

I barely turn my touch off, unless I am in school, because sometimes it turns on in my pocket somehow, and uses up a lot of the battery power throughout the day.

Just keep it in sleep mode for the day, and charge it overnight. That is what i do.

i thought charging it when it still has juice shortens the battery life? also does it charge even though the laptop is closed (and sleeping)?

LiIon batteries don't have this issue. It's the opposite. If you charge it a lot on 1 shot then you drain it more. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_ion_battery
