On my iPod touch 1stgen the power button does not work at all.
If i buy a new battery will it fix the issue or should i just open it up and see if the connectors are loose?

does your ipod now turns on?
or does it charge? if not then it might be a battery-problem - if you don't want apple let it repair you can open it up...
the connectors for power-button are not very interesting..but the battery and it will not be easy to replace it - as you can see in this thread:
    http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106531&highlight=disassembling

it is connected with the board so you can't just disconnect it and replace it

I might just open it up and see if there are any loose connectors
