Hissing is normally caused by a source (DAC) rather than the headphones themselves. It's normally caused by a bad pairing or some sort of interference. What are you using them with?

Pretty sure the issue lay with the earbuds themselves.

Got hissing when listening with my Galaxy SII, HP notebook, and underwater like sound with my iPod.

The Galaxy SII has a cheap DAC, which would explain the sound coming from it. Most notebooks in general have horrible DACs, so that's the reason for that. Care to explain the "underwater-like" sound (be more specific as I have no clue what you mean by that). It can be caused by a poor seal.

I mean the music sounds muffled, and far away. Other bud's never hissed like those did, it was maddening

I think it's just an issue with the iPod. I have the same problem. While music sounds fine coming from my phone or from my computer... music on my iPod always sounds muffled. It's almost like the artist is singing into a pillow. Similarly, the instruments sound muddy.

And it's just the iPod... my dad's iPhone 4 sounds fine, but I've read that the iPhone has a much better DAC than the iPod touch.

This is part of the V-shape signature of the headphones. They are tuned this way where the midrange is recessed a bit. If done right, this is a nice signature to listen to. If done wrong, you get what you have.

So to recap, hissing is done because of the poor DAC. The "muffled" sound is due to the driver tuning (not the DAC, but the headphones). It is done deliberately.

iPhone does have a better DAC. His Galaxy SII has a poor DAC as well (a very cheap one, even compared next to the iPod).

What iPod generation. Mine's 4th and everything is perfect. Beats, Xtreme Xplosive, crap stuff, sound perfectly normal. No odd extras unless I tweak the equalizer apps I have.

The hissing you have, if you have a set EQ, try setting it back to default. You may have an improperly glued plastic sheet. The one that is directly in front of the speaker which creates the sound you hear. You'll know what if you have seen a naked speaker.

You can Wikipedia "piezo-electric material" to see what I mean. That sheet, if malfunctioning can cause a hissy/scratchy sound.

Bowers and Wilkins P3's... I love them so much. They are like my little babies. ;)
